An Evening with Peter Hogg
On November 14, 2017, the MBLA welcomed Peter Hogg, Canada’s leading authority on
constitutional law, for a talk on remedies against unconstitutional actions. Peter Hogg is currently a Scholar in Residence at the Toronto office of Blakes, and is especially appreciated by the legal community for his invaluable contributions to the development of Canadian constitutional law.
Students, professors, and practitioners alike, sat in our Faculty’s Moot Court to hear Peter Hogg’s insightful interpretation of the past 30 years of jurisprudential development in the field of remedies granted by the Supreme Court for unconstitutional actions. With his distinct humour and presentation style, Mr. Hogg revisited some landmark cases such as the Reference on Manitoba Language Rights [1985] 1 S.C.R. 721 and Vriend v. Alberta [1998] 1 S.C.R. 493, sharing with us his unique (and first-hand!) perspectives on the rationale behind the Court’s choice of actions in each case.
The talk was followed by a networking cocktail sponsored by Blakes. Lawyers from the firm were present to meet with students and professors. This was a great opportunity for students to learn more about the culture of learning at Blakes, and the firm's demonstrable celebration of scholarship in the legal community.
